Wetland Mitigation

Wetlands and Watershed.com is a collaboration of the North Coast Regional Council of Park Districts and its environmental consultant, Envirotech Consultants, Inc. The goal of the North Coast Regional Council of Park Districts (NCRCPD) is the restoration and enhancement of wetlands and streams as compensatory mitigation under Sections 401 and 404 of the Clean Water Act, 33 U.S.C. ยงยง 1251-1387, and the incorporation of the restored wetlands and streams into the county park system of its member districts. The Ohio metropolitan park districts constituting NCRCPD are: Erie MetroParks, Lorain County Metropolitan Park District, Medina County Park District, Sandusky County Park District, and Wood County Park District. Each restored wetland or stream will be integrated into a metropolitan park district in Erie, Lorain, Medina, Sandusky, or Wood County, providing educational and recreational environmental benefits to the community.

The NCRCPD's regional mitigation bank currently comprises 4 active mitigation banking sites, 7 sold out mitigation banking sites and 5 pending mitigation banking sites. The regional mitigation bank's service area extends across two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) Districts (headquartered in Buffalo, NY and Huntington, WV), five Ohio counties (Wood, Sandusky, Erie, Lorain and Medina) and eleven United States Geological Survey (USGS) watersheds (Hydrologic Units #04100008, #04100009, #04100010, #04100011, #04100012, #04110001, #04110002, #05040001, #05040003, #05040004, and #05040005). New mitigation banking sites are pending in Wood, Medina and Lorain Counties.

Using funds provided in large part by Clean Water Act permit applicants, the NCRCPD has restored, enhanced and preserved over 3200 acres of wetlands, prairie buffers, riparian corridors and over 3 miles of stream.
